The British Embassy building

The British Embassy building in Athens, built in 1967, was designed by Sir Basil Spence, a Scottish architect.

Sir Basil SpenceBorn in India in 1907, in the early Edwardian era, Sir Basil Spence was notably associated with the radical designs of a varied range of high-profile architectural projects. He was responsible for re-building Coventry Cathedral in England and the New Zealand Parliament's executive wing - known as the Beehive, but also numerous other buildings in the modernist style like the Edinburgh University Library, buildings at Sussex University, Glasgow Airport and the British Embassy in Rome.

The only other example of his work in Greece is a bank building in Athens city centre (at the corner of Korai and Stadiou streets, Klathmonos Square) in typical post war modernism design .

The architect died in 1976 and is considered as one of Britain's most celebrated Modern architects. Full documentation of his work can be found at the Royal Committee of Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS).
