The British Ambassador's residence

British Ambassador's Residence

The Ambassador's Residence at No 2 Loukianou Street is situated on the corner of Loukianou and Vasilissis Sophias Avenue in central Athens. It is a neo-classical town house, probably the finest of the few such remaining houses in Athens. It has a spacious garden and terrace.

The house has witnessed historic events, notably the visit of Winston Churchill in December 1944 at the time of the Greek civil war.

The residence was commissioned in the early 1930s by Elena Schilizzi, the wealthy second wife of the great Greek statesman, Eleftherios Venizelos. The architect, Anastasios Metaxas, also designed the Benaki Museum and the French Embassy. The house was clearly intended to serve as an official residence. After the death of Venizelos in 1936, his widow sold the house to the British Government.  It contains a fine selection of pictures including watercolours of Greece by Edward Lear and paintings by Nikos Hadjikyriakos Ghikas and John Craxton.

The Residence is in constant use in helping to promote all aspects of British policy.  The building hosts events, conferences and discussions; our aim is to make it a hub for debate with Greece's political, business, media and academic community.
