Remembrance Sunday (06/11/2009)

Remembrance Sunday is the day traditionally put aside to remember all who have suffered and died fighting for peace and freedom in the service of their country and all those who mourn them.

The British Embassy honours the day with a Remembrance Service at St Paul's Church (Filellinon Street, Syntagma) in Athens at 10:15 followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery (Faliron) at 12:00. Ambassadors and other representatives of all Commonwealth countries will be present.

Notes for Editors

Remembrance Sunday is the Sunday nearest to 11th November - Remembrance Day, which is the anniversary of the end of hostilities in the First World War, in 1918.

The National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London, is a unique expression of national homage devoted to the remembrance of those who have given their lives in war. It was originally conceived as a commemoration of the war dead of the First World War but after the Second World War the scope of the ceremony was extended to focus on the nation's dead of both World Wars, and in 1980 it was widened once again to extend the remembrance to all who have suffered and died in conflict in the service of their country and all those who mourn them.

Apart from the memorials services in Athens a number of memorial events are taking place across Greece.

On Sunday 8 November:

  • Crete: memorial service - 10:45 at the Commonwealth War Cemetery at Souda Bay
  • Corfu: wreath laying - 11:45 at the British Cemetery

On Wednesday 11 November:

  • Rhodes: memorial service - 11:00 at the Commonwealth War Cemetery.
  • Thessaloniki: memorial service - 10:30 Allied Military Cemetery followed by wreath laying at the Greek Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Greek Army headquarters.
