How to register a birth

A child born abroad is automatically considered a British citizen, provided that one or both parents were born, naturalised, registered or adopted in the United Kingdom.

Birth registration is optional, however, if it is required, the following original documents should be produced:

  • child’s Greek birth certificate (ΛΗΞΙΑΡΧΙΚΗ ΠΡΑΞΗ ΓΕΝΝΗΣΗΣ)
  • parents’ marriage certificate (where appropriate)  
  • one or both parents’ long version British birth certificates or certificates of naturalisation / registration.  In order to obtain copies of original birth/marriage certificates registered in the U.K. you will need to contact:

Please ensure that you include your postal address and daytime phone number.

There is no time limit before which the registration must be effected.

Copies of the Overseas Birth Registration application form are sent to the General Register Office at Southport and a copy is kept at the Consulate for reference. For information on the cost of this service and other please see our Fees Table. There is an extra fee for posting the certificate to you.

The form should be posted to the Embassy or submitted to the Consular section during opening hours. Approximate waiting period for processing application and issue of certificate(s) is 5 working days.

Please note:
Children born to a Greek father or after 08/05/1984 to a Greek mother, are automatically Greek citizens although they may also be British citizens.
