Do’s and Don’ts in Greece

  • Do bring sufficient funds with you for your stay and your return. The British Embassy /Consulate cannot pay your bills.
  • Do take out full travel insurance and Do bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which is available from your local Post Office in the UK or by telephoning the following UK number 0845 606 2030.
  • When you want to hire a vehicle, boat, quad bike or moped, Do check beforehand; is it roadworthy / seaworthy? Is there full insurance cover? Do wear a helmet on a moped and drive carefully; an accident can ruin your holiday.
  • Do take care when visiting well-known historical sites, public squares, and underground trains or when you are in a crowed place; they are favoured haunts for bag-snatching and mugging.
  • Do respect customs regulations; Contraband is a serious offence and carries heavy prison sentences.
  • Do respect Greek laws and customs, disorderly conduct could result in you being arrested, regardless of your British citizenship. The British Embassy/Consulates cannot obtain your release or give you legal advice.
  • Do make sure that your passport is valid and in good condition. Keep your passport safe and keep separate copies of it when travelling. It is advisable to leave a photocopy of your passport and itinerary with a friend or a relative at home.
  • Don’t drink to excess. Too much sun, especially when mixed with alcohol, can result in dehydration and lead to serious health problems. Instead, drink plenty of water.
  • Don’t drink and drive.
  • Don’t get involved with drugs; penalties can be severe. You may need to take a doctor’s letter with you if travelling with certain types of prescriptive drugs.
  • Don’t carry all your money with you.
  • Do trust your instincts! Your personal security depends on it.
